Ingredients
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 tsp. flaky salt, divided, plus more for garnish
  • ½ cup (4 oz.) unsalted butter, cut into ½-in. cubes, cold but slightly softened
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • ¾ tsp. baking soda
  • ½ tsp. baking powder
  • 1⅔ cups (about 7⅛ oz.) all-purpose flour
  • 8 oz. semi- or bittersweet chocolate chips (about 1⅓ cups)
