Ingredients
- subheading: Browning Beef:
- 3 lbs chuck roast or beef stew
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp Chinese 5 spice powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- subheading: Seasoning:
- 4 to 5 cloves minced garlic
- 2 tsp Minced ginger
- 1 bunch scallions sliced (using white parts) reserve green slices as well
- 1 large spoon Chili paste
- subheading: To Deglaze the pot :
- ¼ cup sherry
- 3 cups beef broth
- ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
- 2 to 3 tbsp honey
- 2 to 3 pods star anise
- 2 bay leaves
- Cooked jasmine rice
- Sliced green scallions
Steps
- Cube beef roast or stew
- subheading: In a bowl mix:
- 3 lbs chuck roast or beef stew Cubed (approx two inch pieces)
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp Chinese 5 spice powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Mix well to coat
- In a dutch oven atop the stove, Heat 2 tbsp oil oil and 2 tbsp butter. Add the flour coated beef to pot and brown in batches. Brown approx 2 mins each side. Set aside.
- subheading: In The same Dutch oven, On medium low lest add:
- approx 4 to 5 cloves minced garlic
- 2 tsp Minced ginger
- 1 bunch scallions sliced (using white parts) reserve gree slices as well
- 1 large spoon Chili paste.
- stir and brown to soften the scallions, garlic and ginger approx 1 to 2 mins.
- subheading: To Deglaze the pot add:
- ¼ cup sherry
- 3 cups beef broth
- ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
- Stir well scraping the pot to deglaze the bottom of the pot.
- Continue to stir well and add in
- 2 to 3 tbsp honey
- 2 to 3 pods star anise
- 2 bay leaves
- Return browned beef to pot.
- Put lid on the pot. Place the pot in a 275 degree F oven and cook for 2.5 to 3 hours hours.
- Jasmine rice and green scallions for serving.
