Pioneer Woman's recipe
Ingredients
  • subheading: Browning Beef:
  • 3 lbs chuck roast or beef stew
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp Chinese 5 spice powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  •  
  • subheading: Seasoning:
  • 4 to 5 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 tsp Minced ginger
  • 1 bunch scallions sliced (using white parts) reserve green slices as well
  • 1 large spoon Chili paste
  •  
  • subheading: To Deglaze the pot :
  • ¼ cup sherry
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 to 3 tbsp honey
  • 2 to 3 pods star anise
  • 2 bay leaves
  •  
  • Cooked jasmine rice
  • Sliced green scallions
Steps
  1. Cube beef roast or stew
  2. subheading: In a bowl mix:
  3. 3 lbs chuck roast or beef stew Cubed (approx two inch pieces)
  4. 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  5. 1 tbsp Chinese 5 spice powder
  6. Salt and pepper to taste
  7. Mix well to coat
  8. In a dutch oven atop the stove, Heat 2 tbsp oil oil and 2 tbsp butter. Add the flour coated beef to pot and brown in batches. Brown approx 2 mins each side. Set aside.
  9. subheading: In The same Dutch oven, On medium low lest add:
  10. approx 4 to 5 cloves minced garlic
  11. 2 tsp Minced ginger
  12. 1 bunch scallions sliced (using white parts) reserve gree slices as well
  13. 1 large spoon Chili paste.
  14. stir and brown to soften the scallions, garlic and ginger approx 1 to 2 mins.
  15. subheading: To Deglaze the pot add:
  16. ¼ cup sherry
  17. 3 cups beef broth
  18. ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
  19. Stir well scraping the pot to deglaze the bottom of the pot.
  20. Continue  to stir well and add in
  21. 2 to 3 tbsp honey
  22. 2 to 3 pods star anise
  23. 2 bay leaves
  24. Return browned beef to pot.
  25. Put lid on the pot. Place the pot in a 275 degree F oven and cook for 2.5 to 3 hours hours.
  26. Jasmine rice and green scallions for serving.
