  • 1 smoked ham hock (or 1 cup diced ham or bacon)
  • 6 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
  • optional garnish: fresh parsley, croutons, or a drizzle of olive oil
