Aunt Min's sugar cookies
Best if you make the batter the day before baking....chill for 2-24 hours.

Servings: 4 dozen 1" cookies

Ingredients
  • 1 c shortening  ( ½ crisco, ½ oleo)
  • 1 c brown sugar
  • 1 c granulated sugar
  • 2 t vanilla
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • ⅓ c sour milk
  • 4 c flour
  • 1 t soda
  • 1 t baking powder
  • ½ t salt
  • Food coloring and extra granulated sugar if decorating*

Steps
  1. Oven:  400 Bake time:  7 to 10 min per cookie sheet Total time:  2 to 26 hours incl. chilling
  2. Cream sugars and shortening mixture together.  Add eggs, vanilla & milk.  Beat well.
  3. Sift together last four ingredients.  Gradually add to batter.
  4. Chill for at least an hour: works best if you chill dough for 24 hours before baking.
  5. Shape dough into balls; flatten with glass dipped in granulated sugar.
  6. *For Christmas cookies, roll dough out to 1” thick; cut with shaped cookie cutters; sprinkle with colored sugar (add a little coloring to white sugar and shake together in Ziploc bag if you don’t have any on hand.
