Servings: Serves 4 to 6

Servings: Serves 4 to 6
Ingredients
  • 5 stalks celery, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced (a food processor’s slice attachment works great for the onion and celery.)
  • 2 cups fresh bean sprouts or one 16oz. can bean sprouts
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • Crispy Chow Mien noodles (like you buy in a can or bag)
  • Soy sauce
  •
  • Stir fry sauce ingredients
  • ¾ cup cold water
  • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch
  • 3 Tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  •
  • Instructions
  • Whisk the water into the cornstarch. Add in the soy sauce and sugar and set aside.
  •
  • Preheat a wok or large skillet. Heat the cooking oil on medium. Add celery and onion cooking until they are getting a little soft. Add bean sprouts. Cook another ten minutes. Whisk the cornstarch mixture again to make sure it’s completely dissolved and then stir it into the vegetables. Cook stirring until thickened and bubbly. Serve at once over Chow Mien noodles with a couple shakes of soy sauce.

  • We like it with just the celery, onion and sprouts but you could add bell pepper, mushrooms, pea pods or vegetables of your choice. They tell you to stir fry pork or chicken then add to the Chow Mien but see my husband's Pork recipe below for a better way.
  •
  • Saucy Pork
  •
  • Ingredients
  • 1 to 1 ½ lbs. pork loin or other hunk of pork
  • 1 teaspoon Johnnies Seasoning (or your favorite seasoning salt)
  •
  • Sauce for pork
  • ½ cup Hoisin Sauce
  • 3 Tablespoons ketchup
  • 3 Tablespoons Plum Sauce
  • 4 Tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  •
  • Instructions
  • Stir together all of the sauce ingredients and set aside.
  •
  • Rub the Johnnies Seasoning on both sides of the pork. Put the meat, uncovered, in a baking pan and bake in a 425-degree oven for 45 minutes. Remove the meat and turn the oven down to 325 degrees. Turn the meat over, frosting the top with half of the sauce. Placing it back into the oven and continue cooking it for about 15 minutes, watching so the sauce doesn’t burn. Remove and let it rest. Slice or julienne the meat and top with more of the sauce. Serve meat mixed in with the Chow Mien. Slices of meat in the sauce also make a delicious appetizer.

Notes
  • I often use left over chicken or pork. I julienne it and heat it up in the Saucy Pork Sauce
