This all-American basic apple pie is surprisingly easy to make if you cheat, like I do, & use premade pie pastry.

Servings: 1 9-in. pie

Servings: 1 9-in. pie
Ingredients
  • pie pastry (enough for 2 9-in. pies)
  • 5 to 6 tart apples
  • sugar
  • 1 tbsp. cornstarch
  • ½ tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp. lemon juice
  • brown sugar (optional)
  • ice cream (optional)
  • whipped cream (optional)
  • water
Steps
  1. Preheat oven to 425° F. Place 1 pie pastry in pie pan.
  2. Peel, core, & slice apples. Add ½ to ⅔ c. sugar/brown sugar plus the cornstarch, cinnamon, & nutmeg; stir till apples are well coated
  3. Fill pie pan with apple mixture, leveling the top. Sprinkle with lemon juice; then dot with butter.
  4. Cover with remaining pie pastry, sealing edges.
  5. Brush top of pie with water; sprinkle with sugar.
  6. Bake 10-min. Reduce heat to 350°; bake till crust is brown & apples are tender (app. 40-min.).
  7. Serve hot or cold, with ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
