This recipe comes from an old Santa Maria Cooks Cookbook (December 3, 1982) that my mom owned. I'm happy to share these recipes that came from the families in our neighborhood where Santa Maria Community Center is located. Santa Maria Community Services is a Community Center located in Lower Price Hill in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Ingredients
- 2 cups macaroni
- 4 tablespoons butter
- ¾ pound American cheese or slices
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- (how ever many soft bread crumbs you want to use)
Steps
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Cook macaroni in 2 quarts of boiling water (salted water) until tender. Drain, make a sauce with the flour, butter, milk and salt. Grate and cut the cheese in the sauce, reserving a little to grate over the top of the dish. Place the macaroni in a buttered dish, in alternate layers with the cheese over the top with buttered bread crumbs. Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) until the sauce and macaroni are hot through and the crumbs are brown.
